System Requirements

AAS requires java runtime system and a command line interpreter. The Bad Toast Game has been tested on Windows and Linux. Because the Mac does not have a command line, it is not possible to run this game as packaged on the Mac without installing the AASexe.jar which is located on The Interactive Fiction Archive. You can find AASexe.jar here:

Installing the Game

Unzip all the files into a directory. You need the following files to run the game

Running the Game

The game uses the AAS Java program. In order to execute the game issue the following command:

java -jar AAS.jar BadToast.aas

Note: on Linux the casing of the file names is important.

Finding the puzzle

In order to find the puzzle you must examine the switches.

Looking at the red switch provides the fallowing rule.

What now?
>look red switch
a switch colored red.
A sign on the switch reads:

WARNING!: The red switch must be thrown before the black switch but after the gr
een switch.

What now?

Looking at the yellow switch provides the following rule.

What now?
>look yellow switch
a switch colored yellow.
A sign on the switch reads:

WARNING!: The yellow switch must be thrown right after the green switch.

How to solve the puzzle

The three rules are:

  1. The red switch must be thrown before the black switch but after the green switch.
  2. The yellow switch must be thrown right after the green switch.
  3. The blue switch must be thrown after the black switch.

To solve the puzzle we use table listing all the possibilities:

Complete Walkthrough

Upon starting the game you see the following:

Bad Toast

The cold of the floor permeates your throbbing head. You mouth feels like some s
mall creature of the night had used it as a latrine. Trying to open your bloodsh
ot eyes sends a stabbing pain through your retinas that bounces off the inside o
f your skull making you think your brain will explode. Slowly you pry your sore
body off the floor. Your mind slowly dissolves the fuzzy creatures that had take
n up residence behind your eyes.

"How did I get here?"

Even the thought causes your bruised intellect to quiver in pain. What is even w
orse, you slowly remember parts of dinner party last night. You don't remember a
ll the details, but you do remember drinking way too much, and then offering an
off-color toast to your powerful host. Although you thought the toast hilarious,
 no one laughed. You don't remember the rest but you know your toast is the reas
on you are in this dungeon.


Empty dungeon room
A sign on the wall reads:

"I hope your wits are as sharp as your tongue. You will need your wits to open t
he door to this cell. In order to escape you must thow the five switches in the
correct order. You only get one try to throw the switches in the correct order.
I don't think you want to know what happens if you use the wrong order, it will
be messy."

Throwing the wrong switch

If you throw a switch in the wrong order you die. Each switch generates almost the same message.

What now?
>throw blue switch
You turn on the blue switch.
You threw the blue switch in the wrong order!!!
A ball of lightning forms above the blue switch.
A bolt of lightning flashes out striking you.
You burst into flame.
After a few seconds of agony your body crumples to the floor in a pile of ash.

You failed to follow the warnings:

The yellow switch must be thrown right after the green switch.
The red switch must be thrown before the black switch but after the green switch
.
The blue switch must be thrown after the black switch.


You scored 1 points! Your score is now 1/100!
Your wits where not as sharp as your tongue.
You paid the ultimate price for your bad toast.

Notes

AAS was a hoax according to the IF Wiki. But the system does work. The basis of AAS is XML. That is why I chose AAS to develope this game.
